Record Manufacturing Boosts Australian Turnover

Monthly business turnover rose 2.2 per cent in September (seasonally adjusted), according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Tom Lay, ABS head of business statistics, said: 'Manufacturing division turnover rose 7.0 per cent, its highest growth on record. This was the main driver of the growth in overall business turnover.

'Primary metal product manufacturing was the main contributor to the rise in manufacturing turnover. It grew by 19.7 per cent and was boosted by a rise in non-monetary gold exports.

'International demand also drove rises in turnover for iron ore and lithium miners resulting in in a 4.0 per cent increase for the Mining division.'

Business turnover was 6.9 per cent higher than in September 2024, with 12 industries reporting rises over the last year.

The industries that saw the largest annual rises were Manufacturing (+14.2 per cent), Professional, scientific and technical services (+9.9 per cent), Information media and telecommunications (+8.0 per cent) and Accommodation and food services (+7.9 per cent).

In trend terms, the 13-industry aggregate for business turnover rose 0.5 per cent in September.

This is the final Monthly Business Turnover Indicator (MBTI) publication. The MBTI was an experimental publication developed in 2021 to provide insights into economic activity following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision to cease MBTI was first announced in October 2025.
