A record intake of volunteers into the ACT State Emergency Services (ACTSES) will celebrate graduating from the ACTSES recruit training program tonight.
Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman congratulated and thanked the ACT SES's newest volunteers.
"By choosing to join the ACTSES you have demonstrated your commitment and enthusiasm to serve our community in their darkest times – and for that I thank you," Minster Gentleman said.
"The ACTSES is a vital part of our emergency response in the ACT, as well as a member of a national network around Australia.
"While the main function of the ACTSES, under the ACT Emergencies Act, are planning and response operations for storms and floods, our SES volunteers also provide assistance to search operations and other emergencies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
"With an average of 2,832 requests for assistance per year over the past 4 years, that's an impressive record of service and dedication that you can be proud to be part of."
Chief Officer of the ACT State Emergency Service, Anthony Draheim, said the ACTSES received a record response to its yearly recruitment call for volunteers.
"We had over 341 prospective people apply, and we have 92 people graduating today," Mr Draheim said.
The 92 recruits have completed over 200 hours of training, one night a week for 12 weeks, or over two weeks of intensive training, where they have learned the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their duties safely and effectively.
"They are now part of a team of more than 360 volunteers, based at seven units across the ACT, and are ready to support our community in times of emergency," Mr Draheim said.
