Works have officially commenced on the redevelopment of Bourkes Bridge, marking a major infrastructure project for the Nathalia region.

Bridge and road closures are currently in place on Bourkes Bridge and Murray Road Nathalia between Hardings Road and Ormonds Road, as begin on site bridge demolition and reconstruction works. Traffic management and detours will be in place through to December, and motorists are advised to plan ahead for potential delays.

This project forms part of the broader Bourkes and Bartrops Bridge Redevelopment projects, which will see the full replacement of two of the last remaining wooden bridges in the municipality – Bourkes Bridge in Nathalia and Bartrops Bridge in Kotupna. These bridges have long served as vital links for local communities, farmers, and emergency services, but are currently under a 6-tonne load limit and showing signs of fatigue.

The redevelopment of both bridges represents a $2.8 million investment in regional infrastructure, aimed at restoring safe, reliable access for residents and supporting the needs of modern transport and agribusiness.

Moira Shire Council secured $2.18 million in Australian Government funding through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, enabling the progression of design and construction works.

The project is scheduled to run from September 2025 to February 2026 for the completion of both bridges.

Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the community depends on these bridges every day.

"It is crucial that they are safe and functional. We are committed to ensuring that these bridges will meet the needs of our community now and into the future," Dr Emonson said.

As part of the works, the original timbers from the bridges will be salvaged and repurposed for community use, preserving a piece of local history.
