Reducing your Carbon Footprint in your own backyard

Jim's Mowing has dug around to find out how people can help the environment from their own garden.

Grow your own food

The Problem: Buying groceries from the supermarket leaves a huge carbon footprint.

●     Food Miles: The fuel to import the food

●     Energy consumption: The cost of storing food at precise temperatures

●     Single-use plastic: The copious amount of packaging

●     Pesticides: Sometimes farmers use dodgy methods

The Solution:

●     Planning: Choose produce that’s in season

●     Grow it yourself: 10-20% of bought food can be replaced with produce from your backyard

Get composting

Turns out the most significant way of preventing emissions is diverting food waste from landfills. Food waste in landfill causes emission of methane and nitrous oxide from rotting. The best way to combat this is by setting up a compost bin.

The key benefits of composting:

●     Natural fertiliser — no yucky ingredients + you know what you’re using

●     You can compost more than you think — even paper and cardboard

●     Low maintenance — Chuck in your waste and nature does the rest

Choose the right plants

●     Work with your climate

●     Implement trees for shade

●     Research which plants compliment each other and promote growth
