In September 2025, the government announced Australia's target to reduce emissions by 62-70% below 2005 levels by 2035.
The target was released alongside a suite of documents that describe the government's plan to meet Australia's 2035 target and net zero by 2050 goal. This included the:
- Net Zero Plan
- Sector Plans covering key parts of the Australian economy:
- Treasury modelling
- Nationally Determined Contribution.
The Net Zero Plan focuses on:
- Clean electricity across the economy.
- Lowering emissions by electrification and efficiency.
- Expanding clean fuel use.
- Accelerating new technologies.
- Net carbon removals scaled up.
The transition to net zero presents a huge opportunity to:
- grow the economy and create jobs
- attract investment to new industries for a net zero world
- protect our environment and create a sustainable future for all.
