Regulator upgrades its effectiveness

Earth Resources Regulation continues to implement improvements focused on maximising the efficiency of site rehabilitation and its collaborations across the resources sector.

Over the past 12 months the regulator has updated its Rehabilitation Bond Calculator. The update makes site rehabilitation more effective by enabling operators to more accurately assess and plan for their rehabilitation liabilities.

Supporting this, new guidelines and materials have been developed to assist rehabilitation to take place progressively, rather than at the end of a site's productive life, and to help operators to minimise their liabilities.

Compliance strategies and plans have also been updated to allow site rehabilitation inspections.

The regulator also has taken steps to ensure it is communicating better with the resources sector and is collaborating productively with other regulators.

An Earth Resources Regulation Industry Reference Group has been formed with industry participants from the quarry, minerals and petroleum sectors to provide regular two-way feedback between the regulator and industry.

Arrangements are also being finalised to convene forums with a wider range of groups with interests in earth resources regulation.
