Renewed appeal for information into 2016 fatal pedestrian crash at Wollongong

Strike Force Eumung investigators have renewed their appeal for information into to a fatal pedestrian crash in Wollongong in 2016.

Shortly after 2am on Friday 12 August 2016, emergency services were called to Memorial Drive, between Railway Street and Towradgi Road, Corrimal, following reports a man was found injured on the road.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District attended and located a man with critical injuries. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics and was taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he later died.

He has since been formally identified as 48-year-old man Daniel Cassoli.

Detectives established Strike Force Eumung to investigate the circumstances surrounding Daniel's death and are appealing for anyone who may have information to come forward.

In particular, police are interested in speaking with the person who made a call to Triple Zero (000) at 2.10am the day of the incident, asking for an ambulance to attend the scene. Inquiries have revealed the call was made from a payphone in the Berkeley area, about 15km from where the injured man was found.

Investigators have also released images of the clothing Mr Cassoli was wearing the night he died.

Wollongong Police District Crime Manager, Detective Acting Inspector Jayson Joerdens, urged the community to look at the photos and come forward if they have information that can assist.

"Someone out there knows what happened that night or who made the call for help, so please do the right thing and come forward," Det Acting Insp Joerdens said.

"Every piece of information, no matter how small, could be the missing piece to the puzzle that could solve this case".
