Report of a swimmer in distress in waters off Margate

Water Police are appealing for public assistance in relation to a male swimmer possibly distressed in the waters off Margate late this afternoon (November 14).

Around 6:28pm a female witness was watching the man swimming through binoculars from her residence at Woody Point.

She saw the man was swimming approximately 500m offshore in a south easterly direction.

The woman saw the man was waving his arms and seemed to be struggling in the water. The woman subsequently lost sight of the man.

A second female witness was fishing on Woody Point Jetty and saw a man was swimming in the same vicinity at around 4:00pm.

Water Police, Polair and Coast Guard vessels are currently conducting a search of the area.

Police are requesting that if anyone with information concerning this report including the male swimmer to please contact Policelink on 131444.
