We have published the findings from our review of the Disability (Access to Premises - Building) Standards 2010, commonly known as the Premises Standards.
The Premises Standards ensure that:
- Australians living with disability (and their family, carers and friends) have equal and dignified access to public buildings
- the building industry can fulfil their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
The review focused on understanding people's experiences of accessing public buildings. People living with disability told us they are finding it easier to access premises that have been built since the Premises Standards commenced in 2010.
The review identified opportunities for improvement in 3 main areas:
- regulatory reform
- information sharing
- governance.
The government will take action in these areas to continue improving outcomes for people with disability. These actions will also give greater certainty to the building industry.
