Rescue from fishing vessel at Fisher Point, TAS

At approximately 5:30am on Sunday 18/3/18 a Mayday call was received by Tas Maritime Radio from the fishing vessel Allana. The information was that the vessel had run aground at Fisher Point near Recherche Bay in the south of the state and that they had activated their EPIRB, Tasmania Police say.

Several police vessels including the PV Cape Wickham were activated as well as the Westpac Police Rescue Helicopter and the Challenger rescue jet from interstate.

The helicopter arrived on scene at 6:10am and spoke to the crew of the Allana who were uninjured but in need of assistance due to their vessel being aground and being subjected to heavy seas. A police vessel arrived shortly thereafter and transferred the two men from the stricken vessel and took them to Cockle Creek.

Both men were uninjured from the ordeal.

At the scene of the incident the police vessels and helicopter were subjected to heavy seas and 50 knot northerly winds which was blowing onshore in that area.
