Rockhampton Regional Council is urging residents to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding over the weekend following the Bureau of Meteorology's severe weather warning for the Rockhampton Region.
The Local Disaster Management Group is closely monitoring the situation as a tropical low in North Queensland moves south, bringing about 110 millimetres of rain over the next two days.
Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Mayor Tony Williams said while the LDMG is on alert as a precaution, residents can still proactivity prepare their homes and families.
"The Bureau of Meteorology's current forecasts indicate the potential for heavy rain across the Rockhampton Region from Saturday," Mayor Williams said.
"With that in mind, we're encouraging residents to take simple but important steps to prepare - such as secure loose items around your home, clear gutters and drains, check your emergency kit, and make sure your family has an emergency plan in place.
"I would also encourage everyone to keep an eye on Council's Emergency Dashboard for updates and information throughout."
Mayor Williams reminded residents of the dangers of flooded roads.
"The predictions of heavy rainfall also bring the potential for flash flooding in some parts of our region - so please take caution and never drive in floodwaters," Mayor Williams said.
"It doesn't matter how well you know the area or how often you drive on these roads - floodwaters bring unexpected dangers."
