Response To Flood Mapping Enquiry

Please attribute the following information to Mayor Jon Raven:

Every single day, from the moment I wake up until I go to bed, I am thinking about how to help residents with flood mapping.

It is my number one priority, which is why I have been meeting with insurance companies to advocate for locals experiencing big insurance premium increases and why I have supported additional independent reviews into our biggest flood study.

Logan Councillors and I will continue to fight for the best outcome for Logan residents.

All of this started before I was Mayor, but now that I'm in the role, I'm doing everything I can to fix it.

I will not be quitting on the people of Logan partway through my term, unlike Mr Freeman - whose resignation as Mayor forced a by-election in 2006.

Please attribute the following to a Logan City Council spokesperson:

Logan City Council continues to listen to the community about its flood-risk mapping and policy and is working on the issues raised during public consultation for the draft Logan Plan last year.

Council has at all times through the flood mapping process complied with State legislation, industry guidelines and a best practice approach.

In December, Council agreed to investigate a number of flood risk priority matters before progressing other aspects of the draft Logan Plan.

In managing natural hazards such as floods, Council needs to balance meeting Queensland planning policy and guidelines, keeping people and property safe, and community expectations.

Under Queensland's planning framework, all local councils are required to:

  • use a risk-based approach to flood mapping; and
  • consider a full range of flood events from frequent occurrences to extremely rare scenarios (up to the probable maximum flood or full extent of the floodplain); and
  • consider the impact of climate change.

These requirements for councils were introduced into State Planning Policy following the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry into the 2011 floods.
