Retail Trade Survey: June 2025 Quarter

The retail trade survey measures the sales and stock of businesses that provide household and personal goods and services - for example car yards, petrol stations, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants, and hotels.

Key facts

For the June 2025 quarter compared with the March 2025 quarter, unless otherwise stated:

  • total volume of seasonally adjusted retail sales was $25 billion, up 0.5 percent
  • total value of seasonally adjusted retail sales was $31 billion, up 0.1 percent ($36 million)
  • 12 of the 16 regions had lower seasonally adjusted sales values
  • total value of actual retail sales was $30 billion, up 2.5 percent ($721 million), compared with the June 2024 quarter
  • total value of actual stock as at 30 June 2025 was $9.0 billion, down 1.6 percent ($145 million) compared with 30 June 2024.

Actual values are in current prices and not adjusted for inflation or price effects. Seasonally adjusted values have had typical seasonal patterns removed. Volumes have had price changes removed and are expressed in September 2010 quarter prices.

Sales volumes up in June

Eight of the 15 industries had higher seasonally adjusted sales volumes in the June 2025 quarter compared with the March 2025 quarter.

By industry, the largest movements were:

  • electrical and electronic goods retailing - up 4.6 percent
  • supermarket and grocery stores - up 1.3 percent
  • clothing, footwear, and personal accessories - down 4.3 percent
  • pharmaceutical and other store-based retailing - up 1.2 percent
  • department stores - up 1.0 percent.

Sales values up in June

Nine of the 15 industries had higher seasonally adjusted sales values in the June 2025 quarter compared with the March 2025 quarter.

With price effects included, the largest industry movements were:

  • supermarket and grocery stores - up 2.3 percent ($156 million)
  • fuel retailing - down 6.2 percent ($150 million)
  • clothing, footwear, and personal accessories - down 3.5 percent ($46 million)
  • motor vehicle and parts retailing - up 1.1 percent ($42 million)
  • accommodation - down 2.2 percent ($32 million).

Regional sales values

Twelve of the 16 regions had lower seasonally adjusted sales values in the June 2025 quarter compared with the March 2025 quarter.

By region, the largest movements were:

  • Otago - up 2.6 percent ($46 million)
  • Wellington - down 1.1 percent ($31 million)
  • Auckland - down 0.2 percent ($23 million)
  • Southland - down 2.6 percent ($16 million)
  • Waikato - down 0.6 percent ($15 million).

Stock values down

Stock figures were recorded as at 30 June 2025. All references to stocks are in actual dollars.

The total value of stock held at 30 June 2025 was $9.0 billion, down 1.6 percent ($145 million) compared with 30 June 2024.

By industry, the largest movements were:

  • department stores - down 5.9 percent ($70 million)
  • motor vehicle and parts retailing - down 2.4 percent ($52 million).
