In May 2021, we removed two river red gums to create room for the new lanes as part of the Childs Road Upgrade, but the area will continue to feel their presence for years to come.
The logs from these two trees are being re-used by the City of Whittlesea in park upgrades. Some of them have already found a new home for habitat and landscaping at the Creek Park dog leash area in Mernda. Others will also be going to the Riverside Reserve in South Morang for the playground and landscaping upgrade, which will start soon.
As part of our environmental commitment, we are working with the community and other stakeholders to retain as many trees as we can through environmentally sensitive design and construction methods.
Where a tree has to be removed, we will look for opportunities to re-use the timber for environmental and community projects. We'll protect trees and other sensitive vegetation with 'no-go zones' and have qualified fauna and flora handlers on call. We also have a dedicated environment manager for the project.
We can't wait to see these spaces finished and how the timber has settled in their new home.
