Residents of Bradfordville and the newly completed Josephs Gate subdivision will have new river walkway trails to enjoy in the near future, following Tuesday night's council meeting.
Council received $2 million funding through the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund for continued development of the river walkway, with the 2.6km length of walkway from Cemetery Street to Josephs Gate being delivered in three phases.
"Council recently completed phase one of this project, which comprised 480m of shared pathway on Cemetery Street running around behind Goulburn Gaol" said Mayor Bob Kirk.
"We have now awarded the contract for phase two to local contractor Denrith Pty Ltd [known as Divalls Earthmoving] who will now undertake 1.8km of pathway from Josephs Gate to the old aqua-duct which is located behind the Gaol."
The new section of pathway will traverse through Copford Reach, which has long been considered a picturesque but underutilised section of the Wollondilly River. The Copford Reach Working Party recently recommended priorities for this area including a new boat ramp, a toilet block, parking areas and landscaping for the establishment of picnic areas. These recommendations will be incorporated into future works plans of Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
Phase three of this river walkway project is expected to be completed in early 2022, and will connect phase one and two by creating a new pedestrian crossing over the Wollondilly River. Discussions with the Department of Corrective Services on a preferred location for the crossing are nearing completion.
The Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund is a joint initiative of the Federal Government and NSW Government. Council was awarded the $2 million for this project in October 2020.
