Emergency services are currently responding to a road train fire on the Stuart Highway, north of Emerald Springs.

At around 12:50pm today, the Joint Emergency Services Communication Centre received reports that a road train carrying hay bales was on fire.

The driver was able to disconnect the truck from the trailers, however, the fire spread from the trailers into surrounding grass and scrubland.

The NT Police Force, NT Fire and Rescue Service crews and Bushfires NT personnel are on scene, with fire crews working to contain the blaze.

The Stuart Highway is closed, with traffic being diverted via Dorat Road.

Smoke may affect visibility in the area, so motorists are advised to slow down, turn on their headlights and drive to the conditions.
