Robbery appeal in Newcastle

Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a man in Newcastle this morning and are appealing for public assistance, NSW Police say.

About 12.20am (Thursday 18 January 2018), a 23-year-old man exited a bus on Maitland Road, Mayfield East.

The man told police he was followed by three men, one of whom approached him on O’Mara Street and demanded his wallet.

That man punched the victim in the face before he fled with his backpack, joined by the other two men. They were last seen running north on Ingall Street, Mayfield.

Police are now investigating the incident and are looking for the three men.

The man who assaulted the victim is described as being of African appearance with black curly hair, a black shirt and a necklace. The second man was only described as having a large build with partly-dyed blond hair while the third had a slim build and was wearing a blue and red jacket.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact Newcastle City Police or Crime Stoppers.
