The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Balls as Chief Inspector of Air Accidents following a fair and open competition. Rob takes up his role with immediate effect and replaces Crispin Orr who stepped down after nine years as Chief Inspector.

Rob joined the AAIB in 2020 as an Inspector of Air Accidents (Engineering), rising to become a Principal Inspector in 2024. Before joining the AAIB, Rob had a successful career in the Royal Air Force.

Rob said: "I am honoured to take on the role of Chief Inspector of Air Accidents. Having worked at the AAIB for the past six years, I have seen first-hand the professionalism, dedication, courage and expertise of all those who work at the Branch.

"Our work is vital, and as the aviation sector rapidly evolves I am committed to ensuring the AAIB continues to play a leading role in aviation safety by conducting thorough, independent investigations that make a real difference.

"I would like to thank Crispin for his stewardship of the AAIB and look forward to leading the Branch as we continue in our unwavering endeavour to improve flight safety."
