Rockliff's Roof Promises Lack Conviction, 16 Sept 2023

Premier Jeremy Rockliff's assurances to Tasmanians that he will build a roof on his stadium and bring the project in under $715 million are even flimsier than the soil structure at Macquarie Point.

Despite everyone else beginning to realise that the added weight and cost of a roof will blow the stadium's budget, on Friday the Premier remained pig-headed, saying it was in the agreement he signed up to with the AFL, so it would be built.

On Saturday, The Australian confirmed there was "consideration within government of dumping the stadium roof to lower the height and cost", showing that not everyone within Rockliff's camp is as blind to reality as the Premier.

In fact, last week Minister for Stadia Nic Street was so hesitant to commit to a roof that he completely refused to answer a question about it in Parliament.

While the Liberals' initial $715 million budget was clearly prepared on the back of an envelope, surely they have done some proper research and costings since then.

Jeremy Rockliff needs to come clean to Tasmanians about how much his stadium will really cost, and whether or not the blowouts are so bad he'll have to make his first concession to the AFL and ditch the roof.
