Rocky's Beer Tax Kicks In Today 01 May 2025

Tas Labor

Today marks the start of Australia's most expensive container deposit scheme - or as bottle shop workers and customers now call it, Rocky's Beer Tax.

From today, Tasmanians will pay an extra $6.50 every time they buy a 30-can block of beer, cider, or soft drink. That's more than double the refund Tasmanians get back, even if they recycle every single container.

Let's be clear: Labor supports container deposit schemes, but Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberals have delivered the worst-designed and most expensive scheme in the country.

Bottle shop workers have already prepared for backlash, with signs being put up to remind customers this price hike isn't their fault - it's Jeremy Rockliff's.

The Premier had seven years to get this right. Instead, he's dumped a rushed, overpriced, and poorly designed scheme on Tasmania that will hit families and increase red tape for businesses.

Today, Tasmanians start paying Rocky's Beer Tax and they deserve answers as to why they're being slugged the hardest in the nation.
