After Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, there are multiple reports of missile strikes on cities deep inside Ukraine.
The Ukrainian armed forces has posted a statement saying that Russian military began "intensive shelling" in the east of the country and missile strikes on Boryspil airport near Kyiv.
Local media quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying it has started "the incapacitation of Ukraine's military infrastructure, including military airfields.
"Military infrastructure, air defense facilities, military airfields and military aviation of Ukraine are disabled by high-precision weapons".
However, reports from Ukraine indicate Russian military is targeting civilian infrastructure in the different cities and air raid sirens and explosion heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy introduced martial law across the country in a video address posted on his Facebook.
"Russia conducted strikes on our military infrastructure and our border guards. There were blasts heard in many cities of Ukraine," Mr Zelenskyy said.
"We're introducing martial law on the whole territory of our country.
"No panic. We are strong. We are ready for everything. We will win over everybody because we are Ukraine."
Mr Zelenskyy also added the US had already begun coalescing international support.
