Ryde Shine Ability is a talent quest competition for people with disability who live, work or study in our community.
Last year's inaugural event featured eight gifted finalists, with winners receiving $7,500 worth of recording sessions or music lessons with Katcha Music, and a three-month contract with Diverse Talent Management.
The winners of the 2024 Ryde Shine Ability Talent Competition continue to inspire audiences with their remarkable talent and determination.
The trio came together recently to share their journeys during a catch-up at City of Ryde, six months after being recognised for their unique talents.
It has been a whirlwind of activity for pianist/composer DJ Ha, singer and pianist/keyboard player Abby Jayasuriya and singer and guitarist Patricia Hay.
First placegetter DJ Ha is featured on the inspiring ABC television series, The Piano.
The story of the budding concert pianist, who suffered a stroke as a youth, captured the hearts of the nation, his message of hope and resilience shining through.
'For those of you who are going through darker times, focus on what you love and love will save you," said DJ, who has been approached by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to work on a collaboration.
From the national stage to the local spotlight, the pianist/composer will perform on Wednesday 18 June at our Common Threads art initiative. Register your spot soon for this free event: Common Threads
Abby has completed a Bachelor of Music and works as an Assistive Technology Specialist at Guide Dogs NSW/ACT. She has a vision-impairment and is supported by her Guide Dog, Duke.
"I sing in a range of genres including pop, alternative rock, indi, Sri Lankan songs, and western classical music. I would love to have more opportunities to perform," said Abby.
Patricia picked up the guitar about five years ago to accompany her singing. The mother of three and marketing professional has had a deformed right hand since birth.
She is exploring exciting opportunities, including radio presenting, and is passionate about promoting equality.
Abby and Patricia performed at this year's West Ryde Easter Celebrations event, and all three shining stars will appear at more City of Ryde events in 2025, so stay tuned!
To help steer and shape their careers, Scott Longmuir from Diverse Talent Management also caught up with the winners to develop their profiles and grow commercial opportunities.
The next Ryde Shine Ability Competition will open on 8 September so stay posted at Ryde Shine Ability Competition for the latest updates and opportunities to let your star shine bright.
