One of the four baby peregrine falcons born atop the UC Davis Medical Center last month struck a window Tuesday morning and did not survive.
Experts said it was the largest of the three females, and she died instantly. She will now be picked up by the California Raptor Center to be studied.
From the moment their mother laid eggs, the little falcons captivated many in the Sacramento Region and beyond. Her life, though brief, brought joy to many. Though statistically, window accidents are sadly common for birds, especially younglings learning to spread their wings for the first time, the loss of life is still difficult.
Of the three remaining birds, the sole male mastered the art of flight and has since taken off on his own. Two females remain, and one has successfully flown, but landed on the ground. UC Davis Health staff took her back up to the nest. Our teams will continue to monitor their progress closely.

Our community remains hopeful that these young falcons will successfully take to the skies and find their own way safely.
