The Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A), the Asia Pacific body for mobility engineers, is keeping a close watch on Victoria's Professional Engineers Registration Bill.
Chairman and CEO Adrian Feeney said the Bill should not have any impact on automotive and mobility engineers, but SAE-A was keeping watch to avoid any unintended consequences.
"The legislation is meant to apply to the construction sector, and we want to be sure that this is where it stays," he said.
"We have opened discussions with both the VACC (Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce) and the State Government to ensure that automotive engineers are not accidentally impacted.
"The Bill not only covers five specific areas of engineering – structural, civil, mechanical, electrical and fire safety engineering – but also 'any other prescribed area of engineering'.
"We want to ensure that this 'open door' does not lead to unintended consequences in the automotive engineering sector, which is already heavily and thoroughly regulated."
Mr Feeney said SAE-A's interests in automotive and mobility engineering were closely aligned with those of VACC in automotive retail, service, repair and manufacturing.
"We are talking with the Department of Treasury and Finance to ensure our Members are properly considered in the implementation phase of the new legislation," he said.
