Safe Storage Of Fuel

The Australian Government has advised that, despite concerns about fuel supply linked to the current situation in the Middle East, there is no need for unnecessary stockpiling of fuel.

However, where fuel is stored, it is important to do so safely.

Petrol is highly flammable and can release dangerous vapours, increasing the risk of fire, explosion and harm to people and property.

Residents should be aware that storing and handling certain quantities of flammable liquids may be subject to legal requirements under Victoria's dangerous goods laws - including at residential properties.

To help reduce risks, residents are encouraged to:

  • Store fuel only in approved, properly labelled containers designed for flammable liquids
  • Keep containers tightly sealed and in good condition
  • Store fuel in a well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources such as heaters, pilot lights and electrical equipment
  • Avoid storing fuel inside the home or in attached garages where possible
  • Limit the quantity of fuel stored to what is reasonably required
  • Keep fuel out of reach of children and away from direct sunlight

Following safe storage practices helps protect households, neighbours and emergency responders.
