Construction of the $30million state-of-the-art Palmerston Police Station is on track for completion by mid-2019, with the structural build almost complete.
The milestone comes as the Territory Labor Government nears its election promise of 120 additional frontline officers.
The fast-tracked Palmerston Police Station will support 340 jobs during construction and provide Palmerston and rural residents with a modern facility that will accommodate the regions needs for decades.
The station will be double the size of the existing facility and will include a 24-hour watch house. This will enhance the response times of our Police as they wont have to travel to Darwin CBD to process offenders.
The Territory Labor Government is also nearing the election promise of 120 additional frontline officers by 2020, with 116 more already employed.
Separate to this, 39 of 75 Police Auxiliary liquor inspectors have been recruited.
Complete recruitment of the 120 frontline officers and the additional 75 PALIs will be fulfilled next year.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Nicole Manison said:
The Territory Labor Government promised to build a new police station in Palmerston and we promised to recruit 120 additional frontline officers we are well on track to deliver both.
We have also given our police more powers to tackle alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour, and are investing $5 million into our Back on Track youth diversion program to help break the cycle of crime.
The former chaotic CLP government failed to deliver on their promise of 120 additional officers and they cut vital funding to youth services.
