Safer streets for pedestrians and bike riders

Ferguson Street

Plans to improve road safety and pedestrian and bike riding facilities in Williamstown are out for public exhibition and the community is invited to provide feedback.

Victoria Street is a major bike connection linking several important destinations in Williamstown including schools, the Williamstown North train station, Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail and Williamstown Beach.

The proposed plans for Victoria Street aim to improve pedestrian safety and access, promote safer on-road bike riding, and reduce vehicle speeds, including buffered bike lanes between the parked cars and vehicle traffic which will be separated by line marking.

The proposed works will take into consideration the heritage features of Victoria Street including the street trees, bluestone kerbing and guttering, and wide street character.

Traffic treatment works are also proposed for Ferguson Street in Williamstown to improve the safety of visitors to the precinct and create a calmer street environment.

Ferguson Street is an important tourist destination in Hobsons Bay providing both a premier commercial experience and linking Melbourne's west to The Strand and Nelson Place shorefront.

The proposed works, along Ferguson Street between Melbourne Road and The Strand/Nelson Place, include raised zebra crossings, buffered bike lanes, clearer line marking and electronic 40 km/h signs.
