Safety Checks Essential: Daily Focus Beyond Safe Work Month

It's the final week of National Safe Work Month, and as we near the end of our review of the risk management process, the final step - review controls - will set you up to achieve safety: every job, every day beyond National Safe Work Month.

Safety: every job, every day means that risk management isn't a one-off process. Controls are only effective at eliminating or minimising risks if they are working as planned, which is why reviewing control measures is an essential part of effective risk management - don't wait until something goes wrong.

A review of control measures is required:

  • when the control measure is not effective in controlling the risk
  • before a change at the workplace that is likely to give rise to a new or different health and safety risk that the control measure may not effectively control
  • if a new hazard or risk is identified
  • if the results of consultation indicate that a review is necessary, or
  • if a health and safety representative requests a review.

This week's activity kit template provides some guiding questions for you to answer whenever you conduct a review of control measures.

National Safe Work Month might be ending - but you should prioritise safety in every job, every day

By stepping through the risk management process this month, we hope workplaces around the country have had the opportunity to consider how they can ensure every job is safe every day - no matter your industry, location or role. Thank you for supporting this year's campaign and playing your part in making safety: every job, every day a reality!
