The Crisafulli Government is boosting safety on the Cunningham Highway, with early works starting on a major upgrade between Main Range National Park at Tregony and Gladfield.
Works will start along the 20-kilometre section of the Cunningham Highway, improving safety and reliability on one of southern Queensland's most important freight and community links.
After Labor's decade of decline, this section of the Cunningham Highway has deteriorated significantly and is in desperate need of rehabilitation, the Crisafulli Government is delivering upgrades to get Queenslanders home sooner and safer.
Despite carrying freight, agricultural products, tourists and local traffic every day, the corridor was left without the long-term investment needed to maintain road conditions and keep pace with growing demand.
The upgrade will include pavement strengthening, asphalt resurfacing, batter flattening, hazard removal, new signage and audio tactile line marking designed to improve driving conditions and reduce the risk of crashes.
Given the challenging ground conditions through the corridor, pavement trials will be undertaken before major construction commences to ensure the most effective long-term solution is delivered.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the Crisafulli Government was delivering better roads and more transport to get Queenslanders home sooner and safer.
"We are delivering the upgrades needed to restore the Cunningham Highway, and get Queenslanders home sooner and safer." Minister Mickelberg said.
"The Cunningham Highway is a critical freight and community link, yet after Labor's decade of decline, this heavily deteriorated section of highway has been left in desperate need of rehabilitation.
"We're getting on with the job and delivering the investment needed to restore this road for families and freight transport."
Member for Southern Downs James Lister said the planning work was another positive step for local road users and freight operators.
"The Cunningham Highway is one of the most important transport corridors in our region, connecting communities, supporting local businesses and carrying significant freight movements every day," Mr Lister said.
"Local residents know how important it is that we continue investing in this road, and it's fantastic to see the next stage of improvements moving forward.
"These upgrades will help deliver safer journeys, better reliability and stronger support for the industries and communities that depend on the Cunningham Highway."
