Moira Shire Council has been given the green light to apply for funding for school crossing upgrades in Cobram and Yarrawonga.
Council will seek funding to upgrade existing children's crossings to raised pedestrian crossings at:
- William Street, Cobram (Cobram Primary School).
- Gilmore Street, Yarrawonga (Yarrawonga College P-12).
- Woods Road, Yarrawonga (Sacred Heart College).
Council will apply to the Road Safety Program – School Safety Improvement Package for funding to upgrade the crossings, which have been endorsed by the Department of Transport and Planning through an Expression of Interest process including site-based risk assessments.
Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM thanked the department for supporting the three crossings for these important works.
"It's been a rigorous process to get to this point, with 11 priority sites originally presented to the department for consideration, of which seven sites proceeded into the second phase for project investigation," Dr Emonson said.
"Now these three sites have been chosen to go to the third phase for project development.
"Council is committed to supporting infrastructure projects like this that are essential to the ongoing safety of our community."
Dr Emonson said Council had already engaged with the schools whose communities are serviced by the three crossings.
"Cobram Primary School, Yarrawonga College P-12 and Sacred Heart College Yarrawonga have all provided letters of support for the proposals," he said.
The new crossings – sometimes called 'wombat' crossings or raised priority crossings – will be at the same level as the footpath.
These crossings improve pedestrian safety by making them more visible to drivers, who are required to slow down, and by providing a flat, continuous path for people with mobility issues.
