Sailor Killed During Tropical Storm Elsa

Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Deshawn Levon Johnson, age 26, of Virginia, assigned to Patrol and Reconnaisance Squadron (VP) 16, died after his car was struck by a falling tree as a result of severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Elsa July 7.

Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Deshawn Levon Johnson, age 26, of Virginia, assigned to Patrol and Reconnaisance Squadron (VP) 16, died after his car was struck by a falling tree as a result of severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Elsa July 7.

Johnson was driving north on Roosevelt Boulevard near Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville when the accident happened.

"The War Eagle family mourns the tragic loss of our shipmate," said Cmdr. Timothy Campbell, commanding officer of VP-16. "Airman Johnson had a lasting impact on our squadron and we wish his family healing and peace during this incredibly difficult time." Johnson was assigned to the "War Eagles" of VP-16 at NAS Jacksonville.

VP-16 flies and maintains the P-8A Poseidon aircraft and their mission is to provide maritime patrol services to the fleet in support of national interests.
