Saltwater Creek Mouth To Open Wednesday

Kempsey Shire Council

Due to high water levels in Saltwater Creek at South West Rocks, there is an increased risk to community and commercial infrastructure. The water level is also causing erosion to the break wall along Saltwater Creek.

To mitigate flooding risks and protect assets, Kempsey Shire Council will attempt controlled works to open Saltwater Creek. On Wednesday 16 April, Council staff will excavate a pilot channel in an attempt facilitate water drainage.

Typically, this waterway opens naturally as it is classified as an Intermittently Closed and Open Lake and Lagoon (ICOLL). However, a significant build-up of sand at the creek's mouth is preventing it from reopening on its own.

Appropriate approvals have been secured to undertake these works. This action is in accordance with the Saltwater Creek Entrance Management Plan, as water levels have exceeded the designated trigger point.

Car parks near South West Rocks Surf Club will be at reduce capacity while these works are carried out.

Council appreciates the community's understanding and cooperation as these works are carried out to ensure safety and infrastructure protection.
