New Housing Initiative Prioritises Safety for Women Impacted by Domestic Violence between Gold Coast to Logan.
The Salvation Army Queensland has launched The Priority Project, a new housing initiative designed to improve access to safe, long-term private rental housing for women and women-led families who have experienced domestic and family violence, with the program now rolling out across Gold Coast, Logan and surrounding areas.
Domestic and family violence remains one of the leading causes of homelessness for women and children in Australia. The Priority Project responds to this urgent issue by working directly with real estate agencies and private landlords to ensure eligible women are given fair and timely consideration for available rental properties.
This service prioritises women who have the income and resources to be a good tenant and sustain a new tenancy.
The Priority Project is a collaborative model developed by The Salvation Army, Mission Australia and industry partners, building on a proven initiative already operating successfully with Mission Australia in other regions.
How the Priority Project Works
The Priority Project invites property managers and landlords to consider women registered with the program before or alongside other applicants. Women on the Priority Register are referred through recognised housing and domestic and family violence services and receive ongoing, coordinated support throughout the application and tenancy process.
Landlords and agents continue to use their standard application processes, while contributing to a community led response that prioritises safety, stability and longterm housing outcomes.
Who the Program Supports
The Priority Project supports:
- Women and women-led families impacted by domestic and family violence
- Women with sufficient income to sustain a private rental tenancy
- Applicants assessed as tenancy ready, with appropriate supports in place
Call for Landlords and Agents
Real estate agencies and property owners across Gold Coast to Logan and surrounding communities are encouraged to get involved and help expand pathways to safe housing for women and families at risk of homelessness.
Key points for landlords and agents:
- Properties remain standard private rentals (not headleases or subsidised)
- Market rent applies and owners retain full rights
- Listing a property does not oblige acceptance of an applicant — participation is voluntary
- Properties can be listed before or alongside public listings
Housing and domestic violence services are also invited to refer eligible women to the Priority Register.
