Griffith City Council has secured $60,000 in funding through the NSW Government Environment Protection Authority's (EPA) Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041 (WASM) Litter Prevention Grants Program Stream 1 to help tackle litter on Scenic Hill.
The funding will support a targeted litter prevention initiative at Scenic Hill, where several litter hot spots have been identified. The project aims to reduce both litter and littering behaviours, helping to protect one of Griffith's most popular recreational and environmental assets.
Director Sustainable Development, Joe Rizzo, said the grant presents an important opportunity to better understand and address littering behaviours in the area.
"Scenic Hill is an iconic destination for our community and visitors. Through consultation with the Scenic Hill User Group, we were able to identify priority areas and develop a project that focuses not only on cleaning up litter, but also on preventing it in the first place.
"This funding will allow Council to implement practical measures that encourage responsible behaviour and help preserve the natural environment for future generations."
Mayor Doug Curran welcomed the funding and acknowledged the collaborative effort behind the successful application.
"Scenic Hill holds a special place in the hearts of many Griffith residents. It is where people walk, ride, exercise and enjoy some of the best views our region has to offer.
"This funding is a fantastic investment in the future of Scenic Hill and reflects what can be achieved when Council works closely with community groups to identify local issues. By reducing litter and encouraging positive behaviours, we can make sure Scenic Hill remains a place the whole community can be proud of."
The project will contribute to ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the Scenic Hill environment.
