More than 20 per cent of Australians are people with disability. Southern Cross University is proud to announce a new partnership with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative, to improve disability inclusion and support across student and staff networks.
Hidden disabilities are physical, mental or neurological conditions that may not be immediately obvious to others but can significantly impact daily functioning.
Examples include neurodivergence, mental health conditions, chronic pain, sensory processing differences, or ongoing medical conditions.
Sunflower lanyard for students and staff
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a voluntary symbol to identify that the wearer has a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent and that they may need additional time or assistance in public spaces.
Students and staff can register online for a green hidden disability sunflower lanyard or pin. Staff can also register for a white supporter lanyard or pin. Any other enquiries can be directed to [email protected] .
Staff hidden disability training
To support a more inclusive and understanding environment, Southern Cross University is offering Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Supporter Training for all staff.
This short, self-paced module provides practical guidance on how to recognise and respond to the needs of students, colleagues and visitors who choose to use the Sunflower symbol.
On completion, staff will receive a downloadable Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Supporter Certificate.
"Training like this is vital because it empowers our staff to recognise and support needs that aren't always visible. We also encourage staff to ask for a green wearer pin or lanyard if they have a hidden disability," said Michaela Flood, Student Inclusion Adviser.
"When we understand the real‑world challenges faced by people with hidden disabilities, we create a campus where every person feels seen, respected and able to thrive."
Staff member can access the training via Scout.
