Search and rescue at Charters Towers

Emergency Services responded to reports that a group of people had become trapped near Charters Towers on Friday night, January 26.

Three off-road vehicles went recreational driving to observe storm effects, when they became stranded due to rising flood waters.

14 people, including four children, were stranded for a short time.

Water Police commenced a search and rescue with assistance from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services swift water rescue crews and aerial assets.

Two members of the public attempted an unauthorised rescue with a small vessel which capsized with two people on board. They were luckily able to get to land safely.

A local mustering helicopter responded and successfully airlifted the group to safety. No injuries were reported.
