Search and rescue operations have been suspended following two marine-related incidents; on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
About 11.35am (Wednesday 31 December 2025), emergency services were called to Palm Beach, following reports a boat had capsized in the vicinity of Barrenjoey Headland.
A 47-year-old man was pulled from the water by Surf Life Saving members and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, he died at the scene.
A second man, aged 45, was able to climb onto rocks before he was rescued by the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter and taken to hospital.
A search operation commenced for a 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the boat. The search has been suspended; however, Marine Area Command will continue to patrol the Barrenjoey Headland area.
In a second incident, just after 6am on Thursday (1 January 2026), emergency services were called to Coogee Beach, Coogee, following reports a 22-year-old man was in trouble in the water.
Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command responded alongside Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving NSW and Randwick City Council.
Despite extensive land and water-based searches, the man was unable to be found.
Land patrols will be continued by Eastern Beaches Police Area Command until further notice
