The search has resumed for a missing man, after his boat capsized in the water, in the Illawarra.
About 1pm yesterday (Sunday 1 June 2025), emergency services were called to the break wall in Seawall Road, Port Kembla, following reports of two people in the water.
On arrival, officers attached to Wollongong Police District found a capsized vessel, about 1km south of Port Kembla Road.
An 18-year-old man – who was on the vessel before it capsized – got himself to the shore and alerted members of the public who contacted emergency services.
Marine Area Command launched a search operation, with assistance from Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.
However, the second person – a 78-year-old man – was unable to be located.
About 8am today (Monday 2 June 2025), the search resumed for the man, co-ordinated by Marine Area Command, with assistance from NSW Police divers, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and the Westpac Helicopter.
About 9.30am, part of a vessel was retrieved from the water – the vessel is believed to be that of the missing fisherman.
It has been taken to Port Kembla boat ramp for initial examination.
The search continues.
