Search resumes for missing Malabar angler, NSW

A search has resumed for a man who went missing while fishing off rocks at Malabar yesterday, NSW Police say.

It was about 9.30am today, when a man called emergency services to report he’d been fishing with a friend on a rock ledge on the northern side of Malabar Beach when he’d left the site momentarily, and when he returned his friend was gone.

A search for the missing man began immediately and involved local police, Marine Area Command, the Westpac Helicopter and surf lifesavers on jetskis.

About 10.30am the caller, a 31-year-old man, was winched from the rock ledge by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. He told police from Eastern Beaches Local Area Command his friend was not wearing a life jacket.

The sea search was suspended at dusk but patrols of the foreshore continued throughout the night.

The search resumed this morning and again involved local police, Marine Area Command, NSW Police Dive Unit, the police airwing, Polair, and SLSA members

Police have been told the missing man is aged 29 and from Guildford. Fishing equipment, believed to be owned by the missing man, has been found.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
