Search resumes for teen missing in surf off Port Macquarie, NSW

A search will resume this morning for a teenage boy who went missing while swimming at Port Macquarie at the weekend, NSW Police say.

It was about 3.20pm on Saturday (16 December 2017), when emergency services were alerted to three swimmers in difficulty in the surf off Flynns Beach at Port Macquarie.

Police from the Mid North Coast Local area Command were told life savers saw two boys aged 14 and one aged 16 signalling for help, and were able to bring two boys to shore.

The NSW Ambulance helicopter joined Marine Rescue and Surf Life Saving in searching for the third boy, and about 5.30pm police were advised the child’s body had been sighted; however, attempts to recover him were unsuccessful due to treacherous surf conditions.

Despite the ongoing search, there has been no sign of the teen. Rescuers included Surf Life Savers using IRBs and jet skis, Marine Rescue vessels, Water Police, as well as SES on foot. The Westpac Rescue Lifesaver helicopter and Marine Area Command divers were involved.

The operation has resumed and will involve Surf Life Saving, Marine Rescue, the Westpac Rescue helicopter and police divers.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
