Search to resume for missing man in water in Newcastle

A search will resume today for a man who was reported missing after being swept into the ocean in Newcastle yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 7pm today, emergency services were called to Nobbys Beach following reports two 23-year-old men were at a rock-face near the ocean when a wave knocked the pair into the water.

Bystanders assisted one of the men to safety; however, the second man could not be located.

Officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command, Water Police, a Westpac rescue helicopter, and Surf Life Savers commenced searching for the man; however due to hazardous conditions, the search was suspended about 9.40pm.

The search is set to resume about 7am tomorrow, and will also be assisted by Volunteer Marine Rescue and Newcastle City Council Aquatic Coordinators.

The man was last seen wearing a navy blue t-shirt and black jeans.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
