Search Underway For Missing Swimmer At Gunnedah

A search is underway in the state's west following reports a man had failed to return after swimming in the Namoi River yesterday evening.

About 7.35pm (Tuesday 27 January 2026), emergency services were called to the Namoi River off Old Blue Vale Road, Gunnedah, following reports a swimmer had failed to resurface.

Officers attached to Oxley Police District arrived and were told a 63-year-old man had been swimming in the river when he began to struggle before disappearing in the water.

Local police – with assistance from the Dog Squad, NSW Ambulance, SES, and NSW Rural Fire Service – commenced a search of the river and nearby properties; however, were unable to locate the man.

The search has resumed today (Wednesday 28 January 2026), with assistance from police divers.
