Electricity and gas prices included in monthly selected price indexes
Electricity and gas prices are now being published as part of the selected price indexes release from April 2025.
The addition of electricity and gas prices means the monthly SPI now covers 46.5 percent of the consumers price index (CPI) basket.
These series are available from the download data tab at the top of this page. Series identifiers are:
- Electricity - CPIM.SE904501
- Gas - CPIM.SE904502.
Prior to October 2024 prices for electricity and gas were collected on a quarterly basis. Annual percentage movements since October 2024 have been calculated by comparing the monthly index with the previous year's quarterly collection.
Between April 2022 and September 2024, we used an updated method to calculate the quarterly gas index. This method can result in some volatility for the monthly index but the quarterly CPI gas index is not impacted.
Table weights updated for actual rentals for housing
We have updated the weight for the actual rentals for housing series (CPIM.SE9041S) in the downloadable tables 1.02 and 1.03, to reflect household expenditure for private housing rentals only. Previously this weight also reflected household expenditure for boarding school fees and Housing New Zealand rentals, which is only relevant for the quarterly CPI actual rentals series (CPIQ.SE9041).
