Seniors cherry-pick new homes from range in new Manjimup estate

  • First nine homes finished and will help older Western Australians age in place
  • Homes are available through co-ownership or full sale
  • New affordable housing for seniors is now available in the South-West following the completion of the first nine houses at Cherry Glades estate in Manjimup.

The high-quality, secure and easy-to-maintain homes are proving popular, with two already under contract.

The McGowan Government is dedicated to helping older Western Australians age well in their respective communities by facilitating access to affordable and appropriate housing options in regional WA.

It is also increasing the availability and diversity of affordable and appropriate housing for seniors - particularly those with limited financial resources.

Cherry Glades' first nine homes (six three-bed two-bath, and three two-bed two-bath) are part of Stage 1A which was built by Pindan Constructions Pty Ltd.

The homes include generous verandas and carefully selected building materials to ensure their appearance is in keeping with local character. The planning for Stage 1B will begin in early 2020, subject to sale uptake of the first set of homes.

Cherry Glades is also piloting a unique 'co-ownership scheme' - offering an opportunity for eligible Manjimup seniors to achieve home ownership.

The co-ownership scheme is a fixed shared-equity product for low income seniors over the age of 65 who meet particular social housing income and asset eligibility limits.

Under the scheme, eligible seniors can purchase a minimum 65 per cent equity share of the home and the Department of Communities will retain the remaining equity share as a silent partner, reducing the upfront costs of buying the property.

Cherry Glades is a collaboration between the Department of Communities and the Shire of Manjimup, with support from the State Government and the South West Development Commission.

    Full-sale prices for properties in Stage 1A start from $250,000 for a two-bedroom home and $289,000 for a three-bedroom home. Visit: http://www.housing.wa.gov.au/manjimupseniors

As stated by Housing Minister Peter Tinley:

"These homes at Cherry Glades will allow Manjimup seniors to age in their community - giving them the ability to remain close to family, friends and social networks while providing them with affordable, age-friendly housing options close to services and amenity.

"Residents at Cherry Glades will be able to live independently in their community while enjoying a relaxed and active lifestyle in a vibrant setting right close to amenities including the library, community centre, recreational facilities, medical services, shops and cafes.

"The Department of Communities and the builder, Pindan, have ensured each home has been built to the 'silver level' liveable housing design standard.

"Liveable housing has key features built in to ensure they can be made accessible for any person at any stage of their life - regardless of changing health conditions."
