Serious assault and robbery, two men charged, NSW

Police have charged two men following an alleged home invasion that left a man with serious head injuries, and the robbery of a taxi driver in Merewether today, NSW Police say.

About 1pm (Monday 4 June 2018), two men attended a unit on Watkins Street, Merewether, and allegedly forced their way inside.

They allegedly assaulted a 64-year-old male resident with a metal tyre lever before leaving the premises to meet a taxi they allegedly ordered via a mobile phone.

The resident managed to make his way to the front of the unit complex where a passer-by assisted and contacted emergency services.

Meanwhile, the two men got into a taxi on Watkins Street and allegedly directed the 39-year-old driver to Corlette Street where they allegedly robbed the driver of his talking’s and demanded his personal PIN for his ATM card.

It’s alleged the taxi driver managed to alert a member of the public who came to his aid.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District arrested two men aged 24 and 34, inside a hotel on Morgan Street, Merewether.

They were taken to Newcastle City Police Station where they were charged with aggravated break and enter commit felony, reckless wounding, robbery and take/detain for advantage.

They were refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 5 June 2018).
