Serious assault in Cairns North, QLD

A 52-year-old woman in is in a critical condition following a serious assault in Cairns North this afternoon, Queensland Police say.

Preliminary information suggests at 3.40pm, a woman collapsed on Sheridan Street near Arthur Street.

Members of the public and a passing Road Policing Officer attended and provided immediate medical assistance.

The woman was transported to Cairns Base Hospital in a critical condition.

Police believe the woman may have been assaulted by a 23-year-old woman prior to her collapse.

A crime scene has been declared and a 23-year-old woman is currently assisting police with their inquiries.

The two women are known to each other.

Investigations are continuing.
