Serious assault police and break-in in Townsville, QLD

A man is assisting police following an incident in which a police officer was assaulted in Townsville overnight, Queensland Police say.

Officers were patrolling through Cranbrook when they responded to reports of a break in at a residence on the corner of Charles Street and Cordelia Avenue.

On arrival the Rapid Action and Patrol (RAP) officers observed three men running from inside the house.

As the officers arrested one of the men, a second man has thrown a piece of wood at an officer, striking him on the side of the head.

The officer deployed his Taser, however it was unsuccessful and the second man fled the scene on foot.

Police took the man into custody at the scene, however the other two men have yet to be found.

The 38-year-old male senior constable received severe bruising, swelling and a laceration above the left eye as a result of the alleged assault and remains in the Townsville Hospital.
