Serious assault police charge, Surfers Paradise

A man has been charged following the serious assault of a police officer in Surfers Paradise last night.

At 9.20pm police were patrolling the Surfers Paradise Safe Night Precinct on Orchid avenue, when a man was the subject of a wanding weapons check when he allegedly struck a male Senior Constable in the face, rendering him unconscious.

The 28-year-old man from Victoria man resisted arrest but was subsequently taken into custody where he was charged with one count each of serious assault police and contravene direction or requirement - licenced premises and three counts each of obstruct police.

He was denied police bail and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court today, today (Monday April 18) and was issued with a banning notice from the Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach Safe Night Precincts.

The 34-year-old Surfers Paradise Senior Constable sustained a serious facial injury and remains in hospital in a stable condition.
