Severe Storms, Winds & Fire Danger Hit SE Australia

BOM
Hello from the Bureau, here with your severe weather update on a trough crossing south-eastern parts of the country late tonight into tomorrow, bringing damaging winds, gusty thunderstorms, and elevated fire danger.

As we head into tonight, showers and storms are expected to push into the coastal fringe of South Australia, then move into western parts of Victoria during the early hours of tomorrow morning, reaching central districts - including Melbourne - by mid-morning. By the later parts of the morning, storms will extend into eastern Victoria and south-eastern New South Wales.

Severe thunderstorms are possible late tonight along the coastal fringe of South Australia, with damaging winds the main concern - wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h. Tomorrow, a much broader area will be affected, including large parts of Victoria on and south of the Ranges, again with damaging wind gusts the main issue. The broader green area indicates where non-severe thunderstorms are possible across a wide area of eastern Australia tomorrow.

Damaging winds are the main concern because strong winds 1.5 km above the surface - the same height as many mountain areas - may be brought down by thunderstorms. Orange areas show winds over 80 km/h, even up to 100 km/h, that could be transported to the surface in downdrafts. More generally, a very windy day is expected across southern and central New South Wales, with the strongest winds over the southern and central Ranges.

A severe weather warning is in place for damaging winds across the southern and central Ranges of New South Wales, including the Illawarra and Shoalhaven, with gusts above 90 km/h most likely during the late morning and early afternoon.

These windy conditions, combined with warm to hot temperatures and very dry air, are elevating fire danger across the region. Yellow areas indicate high fire danger, while orange denotes extreme fire danger. Fire weather warnings are likely to be issued this afternoon for areas with extreme fire danger across southern and central New South Wales, including Sydney. On Thursday, elevated fire dangers continue across eastern New South Wales and extend into the southern interior of Queensland.

If you live in south-eastern Australia, now is a good time to stay up to date with forecasts and warnings via the Bureau website, app, or social media, and always follow advice from local emergency services.

Bye for now.
