Severe thunderstorm update – 7am, 26 December

Last night we saw severe thunderstorms and destructive winds impacting parts of the Gold Coast, with winds reaching up to 106km/h at the Gold Coast Seaway.

The Local Disaster Coordinator Centre was activated to monitor the situation and provide assistance to impacted residents.

Today, the Local Disaster Management Group will meet to ensure the ongoing coordinated response to this event.

The severe thunderstorms caused significant damage to properties across the Gold Coast, particularly impacting suburbs in the north including Pimpama, Coomera, Upper Coomera, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Oxenford and Pacific Pines.

Emergency crews have been working through the night to clear fallen trees and other debris from the impacted roads and working hard to assist residents with damage to their properties.

There have been 82,946 power outages across the City with Energex working to restore power as soon as possible.

There are many roads still impacted by fallen debris so please take care when you're out driving.

We ask for your patience at this time, as there are a large number of requests for assistance being made currently and it will take time to clean up and restore services.

Please remember if you need assistance with storm damage call SES on 132 500 or report on the SES Assistance Queensland App. In a life-threatening emergency call triple zero.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to continue later today so if you haven't already, now is the time to prepare your emergency plan and emergency kit.
